Community participation
People belong at the centre of the decisions that affect them.

Understanding this focus area
Community participation is about listening to local priorities and understanding who is missing from a conversation. An activity may be easier to attend when its timing, language, location and communication format take account of the people it hopes to involve.
Start locally
Explain the issue, who is affected and which community groups or services are already involved. Ask whether Nayi Beej has a relevant contact or capacity to explore the request. A shared description of the need is more useful than an assumption about the solution.
Make feedback possible
A participant should know whom to contact with a question, access request or concern. Feedback should be welcomed even when it is critical. Public communication should preserve dignity and distinguish a community’s own experience from the organisation’s interpretation.
